Tour de Jéricho
Erected around −8300 at Tell es-Sultan (Jericho), the Tower of Jericho is one of the oldest known monumental stone constructions, preceding the pyramids by more than 5,000 years. Discovered by Kathleen Kenyon in the 1950s, this 8.5 m tower with its internal staircase attests to a complex social organization in the Pre-Pottery Neolithic A. Its function — defensive, hydraulic or cosmological — remains debated.
